It has been revealed that ancient habitats were here thou sands of years ago. Stone tools, as well as Myasin Fossils of the Mesothic age can be seen every where in this reserve. The Mahavansa records that in 543 BC Prince Vijaya landed at Kudrimalai Point (Horse Point), married Kuweni and founded the Sinhalese race. An ancient burial site has been found in the vicinity of Pomparippu.
This nature reserve in also noted for its fauna and flora. Huge trees, shrubs and grassy areas cover the whole park. Among the flora Veera, Palu, Milla, Kaluwera and Wewarana stand tall.There are many types of vegetation to be found in Wilpattu; Littoral vegetation, including Salt grass and low scrub monsoon forest with tall emergents, such as Palu
